6th Week (Please note two Meetings)
Monday 8:00 Reflections on John Paul II’s Theology of the Body (not on Wednesday)
John Paul’s ‘Theology of the Body’ may well rank as the most positive account of human sexuality in the history of Christianity and is becoming the basis of much modern exegesis of Church teaching on matters of sex and sexuality. This session explores the strengths and weaknesses of John Paul’s approach and points to possible refinements that might be made in the light of experience.
Wednesday 8:00 Ethics 2 Binary ethics, virtue
and creative freedom
If we seek to discover what is at the core of the Christian Way of life, where do we look? How do we make sense of the relationship between precept and virtue, moral success and moral failure, the call to perfection and the realities of the human journey of faith?
7th Week Wednesday 8:00 Reading the Tradition part 2:
Salvation and Truth in the history of the Christian Church
We began looking at the narrative of the Old Testament, with its guiding thread of salvation history, as a key to understanding the events of real history. In the dynamic tradition of Christianity in general and of Roman Catholicism in particular, what different ways have there been of recognising God’s presence in history throughout the ages, and what keys to we have for understanding what happens in our own time in everything from rules of conduct to political action, from liturgical norms to the proclamation of eternal truth?
8th Week Wednesday 8:00 New Testament
and the Resurrection of the Word
The sacred texts of Christians have been under the microscope in a way that few other faith traditions have experienced and yet the New Testament continues to give a window on the foundational realities which sustain the Christian community. How can we accept the value of critical readings of our sacred text and remain open to the truth of the vision that they proclaim? For many thinkers today, the great narrative of the Word of God is over and there is no story left. In this session we look towards the resurrection of the Word.
