Accommodation applications to live in the Catholic Chaplaincy, 2010 – 2011.

We welcome applications from students of the university who wish to live in the Catholic Chaplaincy as part of a Christian community.

The main work of the Catholic Chaplaincy is to help Catholics of the university, and anyone who is interested, to encounter Christ more deeply in their lives, to deepen their love of the Church and to find their way of contributing enthusiastically to the needs of the world, through their active participation in the Church. A key to this is to have a welcoming community of people who are happy to share something of their lives and faith experience with those who come from outside. This requires a life of prayer, discernment and generosity as well as a good sense of humour.  It is this which we hope to offer in the Chaplaincy, both to those residents who live here and to those who want to be part of this way of life.

For this dream to become a reality, there are certain expectations which are asked of those who live in the chaplaincy. We ask everyone

    • to find at least one way of contributing to the hospitality of the house and to the various social and intellectual activities which are hosted in the chaplaincy
    • in particular, to be available to help on a Sunday as a key day in the life of the chaplaincy. For example, there is always a need for members of the community to:
      • help set up the Newman room for the Sunday;
      • welcome people as they arrive before the Masses;
      • prepare and serve tea and coffee after the 9.00am and 11.00am Masses;
      • help serve the Sunday lunch;
      • help count the collections;
      • help as readers, servers, Eucharistic ministers or musicians.

There are also jobs and responsibilities in the house, such as recycling , overseeing the library or acting as fire warden.  We hope, in this way, to help develop the gifts, talents and interests of each member of the community in the generous service both of the chaplaincy and of the wider community.

Individuals have different needs and desires and are at different stages in their spiritual lives, but we would hope that the members of the community would have a desire to deepen their life of prayer by participating in some of the liturgies of the chaplaincy.

There may be, also, other liturgies which you may wish to start and support. This said, we understand that everyone has different workloads as well as temperaments and we would not want to ask more than is possible for each person.

If you think this way of life may be truly life-giving for you (and for others!), please do fill in an application form or have a chat with one of the chaplains. We very much look forward to hearing from you. With our prayers and thanks,

Fr Simon Bishop SJ, Fr John Moffatt SJ, Fr Roger Dawson SJ and Miss Alexandra Harrod.
