A Word from the Chaplains

Thanks to all who contributed to last week’s survey about Liturgy. We got a very good response (about 110) which seems (to judge from the spread) to have been fairly representative.  Thanks too, to the smaller number who took part in a more detailed discussion after lunch on Sunday.

The response to questions about welcome, prayerfulness and preaching were encouraging.  The responses to the questions about reverence, musical style and Latin were informative, with, as one might have expected, the majority reasonably content, a significant minority in each case desiderating more reverence, more traditional music and more Latin, and a smaller minority wishing less solemnity, more modern music and less latin.

Concretely, we need to do more work on the music at the 11:00 Mass (my responsibility, JBM sj).  Though, as any of you will know who have been involved in music in your home parishes, this is always a challenging circle to square. We would ask for patience as the new team finds its feet and as we try and recruit more members to our choir.

On the question of music at the 5:45 Mass, opinions were evenly divided.  On the question of the offer of an 8:30 Mass, over 30 people suggested this might be a good thing. so it is certainly something we will be considering when planning for next year.

Once again thanks for your help. See you on Sunday...
